Comment: The president’s
announcement comes amid questions regarding his ability to run for Venezuela ’s
presidential elections set for 7 October 2012. Without an obvious successor
matching his popular and charismatic ways, it is likely that Chavez’s socialist
movement will significantly weaken after his death. There is a high possibility that his exit
from the political stage will also mark an inner struggle for power among his
supporters. On the other hand, Chavez’s approval ratings have risen to near-60
percent, largely due to his illness, and a full recovery would restore his
image of triumph over adversity and an aura of invincibility as he remains the
clear favorite in the run-up to next year’s elections.
