Terrorist Woman Awaits Trial

The first woman tied to al-Qaeda requests the court more time to prove her innocence. The Saudi woman nicknamed “Lady al-Qaeda” holds 18 terrorism related charges against her. The charges include being a member of al-Qaeda, recruitment of new members, providing shelter, acquisition of firearms, forging identity cards, financial support, etc. She proclaims her innocence and views herself as a victim of her two previous husbands who both had connections to al-Qaeda. Her arrest happened last year on Feb. 20 and hearings are scheduled on October 29 of this year.

Chemical plant causes deadly protest

16 November 2011 A fertilizer plant in northern Egypt is the location of a clash between the Egyptian army and protestors. Protestors were against the pollution caused by the plant. Causalities include one man dead and 11 people injured. Within the last six days, demonstrators used blockage of the port town of Damietta to use to protest the plant. The plant officials have announced the potential production of two more plants locally, which is causing the protesting. The fertilizer plant received news that they are no longer able to operate by Egypt’s ruling military council. These types of activism is becoming more frequent, now under the post Mubarak ruling. State-owned Misr Oil Processing Company and Canada’s Agrium currently jointly own the plant. The residents took to the streets on Tuesday demanding the relocation of the plant. Al-Shabaab and Kenya Twitter War

Al-Shabaab and Kenya have been constantly exchanging insults through twitter, regarded as a media war. Emmanuel, Kenya’s army spokesman who currently has a twitter account with 10,000 followers, posts updates on the military state of play in the incursion into Somalia. With the screen name @HSMPress Al-Shabaab has joined the twitter community, it has currently posted 80 times and has about 3000 followers. Starting it first tweet in Arabic with a Qu’ranic phrase saying “ In the name of god, the most gracious, the most merciful.” Al-Shabaab has released its messages in fluent English. In recent months, Al-Shabaab has been running sophisticated media operations, including press releases in English with photos attached to them.
